The Dark Knight Rises was expected to be a blockbuster movie that would
blow fans away even more than the Dark Knight had. To be fair the Dark
Knight broke through so many barriers not only in the comic book movie
industry but in the film industry in a whole therefore it would be near impossible to replicate the same kind of movie let alone surpass it. The Dark Knight drew
critics wordless because they were expecting it to be the same super
hero type movie viewers had become accustom to seeing but they were
pleasantly mistaken. The Dark Knight exploded in the box office due to
over whelming popularity because of the films dark gritty feel along
with it's sensational acting by Heath Ledger as the Joker. The Dark
Knight showed audiences that super hero movies aren't always hooky and
witty but they could be dark and scary which was a revolution in the
comic book movie industry and especially in the bat man series which
before the Christian Bale's movies featured laughable characters and
cheesy one liners which had little to do with the plot. The revolution
in the batman series sent ripples through the movie industry and set a
new bar for movies in the future. Therefore, the Dark Knight Rises could
never live up to the expectation viewers had for it because of the
shear darkness that the Joker brought to the Dark Knight. The Dark Knight Rises in opposition to it's name actually fell in the eyes of viewers who were expecting more from the movie.
I agree for the most part with your post. The Dark Knight rises was definitely doomed before it even came out. As is so often with a lot of great movies, its successor has tough shoes to fill and this was no different. In fairness it did live up to the billing of a really good movie, but in comparison to its predecessor it fell short.
ReplyDeleteAs a whole though I definitely think Chris Nolan did an excellent job of reviving a movie that had produced a sub-par product for far too long. From the Batman Begins where he tells batman's origin story and how he became who he is, to bringing out the best in his actors in the Dark Knight and making it very believable, and concluding it with an epic and unpredictable finale with the Dark Knight Rises.
