Top 3 underrated artists in any genre(In My Opinion)

According to merriam-webster’s dictionary to be underrate is to undervalue one's ability. That is the criteria I have based my decisions on. Just to clarify, an artist that is still up-and-coming and has not gained any form of popularity yet, but have supreme talent will not be considered in this list because they are simply unknown. To be considered underrated you have to be known. That is why I am focusing on those who have made it to an extent but do not get fully appreciated for the work they do.

Many know he is a good actor, but when it comes to listing those on the a-list he is often overlooked. The way he goes about his art is with diligence, authenticity, and integrity. He has done a great job of incorporating those values into his movies, and these are qualities that are very admirable in this line of business.

The biggest reason I believe him to be underrated is he is more than just an actor but rather an intellectual and an actor. He really thinks about the angle he wants to take when producing or acting in a film and portrays it very effectively on screen.

Mr. Affleck has really started to crank up the notch in these last few years. But it almost feels like no one is noticing. Recently, he has delved more into producing, writing and directing his own films. No easy tasks. Ie: Argo, and The Town. These movies are some of the most breathe-taking movies I’ve seen. In the town he was not only able to do all three of the aforementioned skills, but also deliver an Oscar worthy performance on screen in my opinion.

Janelle Monae is a severely underrated musician. You probably have not heard of her till now. Her music is so unique that I cannot begin to categorize her into just one genre. She incorporates a mix of everything including soul, jazz, r and b, rock, and pop. This is how she has differentiated herself from every other artist. With such diverse songs as Tight rope and BaBopByeYa, she has shown an admirable amount of musicianship and has gone the route of producing what she feels regardless of what category people may think it falls under.

She was signed by Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, and ever since she has been showcasing her creativity to the world. Not only does her hair add to her uniqueness, but the fact that she is an african-american woman that plays several instruments such as the guitar, piano, and she works with a band as well. All traits you don’t normally see all put together.

Bon Iver is another artist that almost defines the words unconventional. Their out-of-the box music falls under the category of Indie-folk music. Although they have already won a grammy, they still somehow seem overlooked. When mentioning top bands in the country, they are usually forgotten.
I beg to differ. I believe they are amongst great bands like coldplay. Their unique sounds and killer beats are what attract their fans to them. I first heard of them when they featured some of their talents on kanye west's song Lost In The World. You can hear them providing some background voice notes and enhancing the overall tone of the song.

I'll have to admit their music is not for everyone, but here is a sample for you to judge for yourself.

Top 3 overrated artists in any genre(In my opinion)

Top reason: recognized more for his average looks(in  my opinion) rather than his acting ability.

His acting has become a cliché cornball show. We’ve seen it before. We’ve seen it all before.

I believe he was a much better actor a few years ago, I used to love watching him in the Ocean’s series(hyperlink) but recently I’d rather not bother with any of his movies. I’ve heard some people note him as the best actor we have today. What a joke! Not to mention a severe overreaction to a person that seems to have lost sight of why he is acting in the first place. In His recent movies(except for Moneyball) he has lacked that swagger that truly made him a great actor. His most recent movie (Killing Them Softly) brought in the lowest box office total any of his movies have ever received in his entire career. Bringing in a meager 6 million dollars. Such a fall from grace for such a prominent star. He is regarded as one of the 25 most influential people in America, deservedly so, but dear I say it? He needs to improve his acting ability.
For him to do so I believe he needs to expand his genres. He is dominant in his always-in control look, but it might be time for a change. Look at other actors who have done the same. Mark Wahlberg in Ted, Leonardo DiCaprio in just about all of his movies. It keeps them relevant, and expands their abilities as actors. Pitt should take this advice and do the same.

In fact I believe his wife Angelina Jolie to be a much better actor than he is.

Honestly, one of the true signs of a good singer is whether or not he/she can sing just as good live as they do on the finished recorded product. Katie Perry cannot sing live. Although I have not personally seen her live, this fact has been well-documented.

In terms of her actual singing she lacks that intensity that I have been accustomed to from a lot of other artists. A solid performance every time you come on stage regardless of the circumstance is what fans hope for every time they see you in concert. Any artist can record a song and fine tune it mechanically to make it sound like a hit record. But the previous points I made are what separate the good from the great.
Take someone like Kanye West for example. He brings passion every time he comes on stage and brings the exact same emotions that are felt in his songs in to real life. That is why he is loved so much. And that separates him from the pack.

Maybe I’m being too harsh in comparing her with someone as polished as Kanye West, but for someone who is just as popular I definitely expect more.

I thought about putting Lil Wayne here but I think he’s been bashed enough as it is. It’s a good thing his right hand man is just as overrated as he is.

Believe it or not this one hurts me. Seeing him go from a lyrical genius, yes lyrical genius, to a pop artist in one false swoop has been disheartening. Drake has been quoted as saying he got his puns and intricate lyrics from his mom; when she used to give him several riddles a day to solve. It developed his mind greatly and it is what gave him the ability to be so deep lyrically early on in his career.

Based on the material he  has released to the public in the last 3 years or so he is definitely overrated, and it leaves me asking myself, what happened to the real Drake? Drake is a very talented artist don’t get me wrong but I do believe he can do better, and has done better.  His first two mix tapes Comeback Season and Comeback Season 2 were the highlight of his career. Don’t believe me? Check it out! Each song brought a soulfull-ish/r and b flavor mixed with a deeper level of rap. His puns were deep, lyrics were more authentic and the beats on his songs were passionate.

What do you think of this lists? Any disagreements? Agreements?

Les Miserables

Les Miserables is an upcoming film musical that has gotten quite the attention of late. The film is based on a previous musical done by which is also based on the French novel in 1862 by Victor Hugo.

One thing that has critics raving about this film is its production. All the songs will be recorded and performed live on set, which has been dubbed as the world’s first. Such a unique take on a film is certain to draw audiences from far and wide.

I am certainly not one to sit through a musical but this one seems different. The trailer had a way of captivating me and keeping my attention. That along with my background knowledge of its production made it even more appealing.

Where I believe this movie will excel the most is the character dialogue and cinematography. Musicals have such a great way of illustrating a characters intentions and making them more lively much so than a normal film would. During the filming of the movie each actor had one chance to get it right because it was all live singing. Hugh Jackman was quoted as saying it made him show and bring out the most of himself than any other film he’s done. It made each actor reach into their inner feelings in order to voice or sing out what their character is feeling. This is what makes musicals so effective.

Russell Crowe said “It is once in a lifetime”. It is a very organic idea, and has me excited to go watch it.
The movie starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe is set for release on December 25.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

After a few years of stalling, The latest installment of the Lord of the Rings phenomena is almost upon us. With the release date for the highly publicized prequel ‘The Hobbit’ set to arrive on Dec.14, movie enthusiasts are eagerly waiting. Tickets have been pre-ordered and they are beginning to sell out. And fast.

What sets this academy award-winning trilogy apart from regular films is the emphasis it places on such things as costume designs, visuals, character development and its incredible story line. Largely regarded as one of the greatest trilogies of all-time, The Hobbit has large shoes to fill, to say the least. The franchise started back in 2001, and it is interesting because although these movies came out in the earlier part of the century when visual technology had not yet reached the level it’s at today, they  still managed to be ahead of the times; which is part of what makes it so great. It will be interesting to see the changes visual technology has on the production of the film almost ten years later. We almost will inevitably be blown away. The key thing to watch will be whether or not they will be able to deliver their usual solid story line in the process.

Directors and producers have struggled in that aspect. Their intentions are usually set in stone from the onset as to whether they want to focus on captivating the audience with incredible cinematography and visual art, or focus on the content of their story, character dialogues, etc. The most successful films in today’s industry are those who are able of incorporating both aspects equally without comprising either in the process.

Regardless, fans from all over will be eagerly waiting to see this beloved movie phenomena. But what do you think? Do you think The Hobbit will live up to the greatness of its predecessors?

Forms of Music Around the World

Forms of Music Around the World

I have lived in one city my entire life, that city is Calgary. Because of this I have primarily been exposed to western music (rock, pop, hip-hop, country, electronic etc.). If the internet didn't exist I might not be aware that these types of music aren't the only ones that exist. Around the world people are listening to many different types of music, some sound very foreign and obscure. Music is not exclusively for listening either. Around the world people are expressing music in very different ways compared to western culture. These are some different ways music is expressed in other cultures.

Electric Guitar vs Acoustic Guitar

Electric Guitar vs. Acoustic Guitar

Electric and acoustic guitars are similar, as they both have 6 strings, a head stock, a neck with frets, and a body. That is where the similarities end.

Acoustic Guitar
Acoustic Guitars have a hollow body, as illustrated by the picture above. The hollow body causes the vibrations from the strings to echo loudly, resulting in a resonating sound with no electronics required. The strings are generally thicker on acoustic guitars, which favors the playing of chords rather than intricate guitar riffs.

Electric Guitar

Electric guitars have a solid body, and unlike the acoustic guitar they can't produce a loud sound on their own. To produce a resonating sound the electric guitar must be plugged into an amplifier. The strings are generally thinner on electric guitars, which allows for versatile playing of all styles. Amplifiers have varying sound settings, which allow the guitar to sound like any setting applied on the amplifier. This places more emphasis on the amplifier than the guitar itself (in terms of sound).

This art is going to be more about the pictures. It is so beautiful and captivating that I had to research many pictures!! I hope you enjoy and I shall provide a brief background for those who would like one.

Street art is art found in public spaces - in the streets. It can be found on sidewalks, buildings, streets, etc. The arts within this broad category are arts such as graffiti, sticker art, street installations, street poster art, chalk art, and stencil graffiti. Street art is a great way for artists to express activism opinions or controversial issues.

Sadly Street Art is frowned by many as it is illegal. I strongly believe that street art is one of the most self expressive arts out there. I truly see the beauty behind it and it amazes me what these artists can do. To explain my amazement I will show a few pictures that are sure to amaze you.

When used correctly, street art is beautiful and provides many important messages.

                                                              Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest musicians of all time. He is also one of the greatest, most influential guitar players ever. He wrote more than 50 songs and 3 albums, in his career which was tragically cut short at the age of 27. Highlights of his career would be songs like: All Along the Watchtower, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), and Purple Haze, as well as legendary concerts such as: Woodstock and The Isle of Wight. After producing 3 albums and 50+ songs in under 5 years, I wonder how many other great songs the world could have been blessed with, if Hendrix did not die at the young age of 27. I believe he could have released up to 5 more amazing albums, but the world will not get to hear them because he is an artist who was gone before his time.

Thrift Shopping

The past couple years I have noticed that the concept of thrift shopping has become more and more socially acceptable for lack of a better term. In the past if people told their friends they bought something from a place other then hollister and abercrombie they would be thought of as 'uncool'. I think its awesome that more and more people have been inclined to by second hand, and help out charities like you do when you shop at value village. Whether its an ugly Christmas sweater, or an entire wardrobe I think thrift shopping is an awesome alternative.

                                                       Buying Concert Tickets

Concerts are very enjoyable events. They can differ in terms of music genre, venue, artist, price and many other aspects. To attend one of these concerts, usually you will need a ticket. This post will explain how obtain tickets for various types of concerts.

Small Local Concert. These concerts usually feature local and/or unsigned artists at small venues such as bars, community centers and more. These bands and venues may not have much exposure, so tickets will likely be unavailable on Ticketmaster or other online ticket retailers. To obtain tickets to a small local concert you will have to contact one of the artists who will be playing that night, contact the venue prior to the concert or buy tickets at the door. Tickets will likely be inexpensive ranging from 5-15 dollars. Example: Reckless playing at The New Black Center for Music and Art.

Stadium Concert (medium sized fan base). These concerts usually feature famous bands who's popularity is either on the rise or decline. Because of the rising or declining popularity of the artist, these concerts won't be selling out. Tickets for these concerts will be available on Ticketmaster and other online ticket retailers, as well as at the box office. Tickets will likely cost between 20 and 100 dollars depending on the artist. Example: Three Dog Night playing at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Stadium Concert (massive fan base). These concerts feature extremely famous artists who are at the peak of their popularity (Justin Bieber), or bands that have become legends (Led Zeppelin) and have long lasting appeal. These concerts always sell out, and depending on the popularity the concert can sell out within 5 minutes or a month. Tickets for these concerts will be available on Ticketmaster and other online ticket retailers, as well as at the box office. Certain steps must be taken to increase your chances of obtaining a ticket to one of these shows. The most helpful steps are: finding pre-order codes and most importantly camping out either the box office or Ticketmaster (in preparation for a 10 minute sell-out). Example: Red Hot Chili Peppers playing at a a sold out (in less than 10 minutes) Scotiabank Saddledome.

Body Piercing

In the past body piercing was cultural identifier and often was an important part of rituals. Ear, tongue, and lips piercing were a big part of many less main stream cultures. In more modern times most piercing are looked at as a sign of individuality rather then a cultural identifier. Many people will go through the pain of having a needle shoved through a body part in order to achieve the individual look they strive for. In our society we have normalized this form of body modification, from a young age its common for people to have piercings. Ear piercing is a prim example of that. As teenagers is common for girls to get their noses and bellybuttons pierced, that is just another example of how body piercing has become increasingly popular in our culture.

Outsider Art is an art mainly performed by self-taught of naive art makers. Those who participate in this art have little to no contact with the mainstream art world. Almost all of these artists, artwork is found AFTER their deaths. Outsider art reflects ones mental states, fantasy worlds and unconventional ideas. A huge amount of these artists are also diagnosed as insane.

Outsider Art has grown with insane asylum inmates. It is said to have calmed the patients down. One of the most notorious cases of this was the artist, Adolf Wolfli. This art is truly beautiful as it shows us that there is an artists within all of us. Outsider art is a very broad term and I will list some art types that also fall under the "outsider art" category:

  • Raw Art
  • Folk Art
  • Intuitive Art
  • Visionary Art
  • Naive Art
  • Visionary Environments
